Matala Quartz Sleeve Replacement and Cleaning Instructions
Please note as of January 2019 the replacement quartz sleeve for the Matala Stainless Steel UVC 40w, 75w, 150w and 300w is now only available with one end closed and one end open. (The original quartz sleeve was a double open end sleeve. If your original double open end sleeve is in good condition it can be used without reason to worry.) The new sleeve should be carefully inserted into the stainless steel body with the open end in the direction of the electrical connection. Quartz Sleeve Replacement Instructions:
Turn off the power supply and turn off the water pump to stop the influent water. If the UV is installed Close all valves required to prevent draining water from the pond out of the UV during the maintenance process.
1. Discharge the residual water in the UV housing by unscrewing the small drain plug in bottom of housing. Wrap this drain plug with 3 to 4 wraps of Teflon tape and thread back into the housing. If you choose not to unscrew the drain plug, the water in the UV body will simply drain out the end of the unit.
2. Remove the UV lamp.
3. Unscrew the compression nuts from both sides of the UV housing.
4. Carefully remove the brown Viton O-Ring from both ends of the quartz sleeve. For proper seal we recommend to replace the brown Viton O-Rings once per year during cleaning or sleeve replacement.
5. Slowly pull out the quartz sleeve from the UV housing. DO NOT ALLOW THE QUARTZ SLEEVE TO DROP INTO THE HOUSING, THIS COULD CAUSE BREAKAGE. To prevent the quartz sleeve from falling inside the housing, use your finger or a skinny wooden dowel to hold the sleeve up while slowly and gently pulling the sleeve out of the opposite end of the housing.
6. With a damp rag, clean both ends of the housing to remove any debris which may interfere with a proper seal with the quartz sleeve.
7. Make note of a brown flat gasket (packing) on both ends of the quartz sleeve. This flat gasket (packing) acts as a safety cushion between the quartz sleeve and the housing. The outer edge of this flat gasket should be approximately ¾” from the end of the sleeve. The flat gasket should not interfere with the compression fitting of the Viton O-Ring.
8. Inspect the sleeve for cracks or chips on either end. If it is cracked or chipped replace the quartz sleeve. If it is in good condition it should be cleaned annually with 100% Muriatic Acid. This acid can be found through a swimming pool supply source. Wear rubber gloves, do not get on skin, do not inhale acid fumes and protect eyes from splash. Use a rag soaked in the acid to wipe off the quartz sleeve. This will remove calcium deposits and organics both which prevent transmission of UV light. Do not contact the rubber seals or flat gasket with the acid. Rinse off the sleeve with freshwater to remove acid. A clean sleeve and a new lamp will give the best performance possible.
9. Slowly insert the quartz sleeve back into the housing. Hold up the quartz sleeve with your fingers and DO NOT ALLOW THE SLEEVE TO DROP INTO THE HOUSING. Carefully align the quartz sleeve with opposite end of housing so that the sleeve extends an equal distance on both ends of the housing. The sleeve should extend approximately ½” on either end of the housing.
10. Dampen the brown Viton o-ring with water and slide over each end of sleeve. Maintain an equal extension of sleeve on both ends and use your finger to seat the Viton o-ring into the compression groove.
11. Screw the compression nuts back over the quartz sleeve and Viton o-ring with firm hand pressure only, no tools.
12. Turn your water pump on and let the system run for 24 hours before installing the lamps and check for leaks at the open end of the compression fitting. If a leak occurs it will permanently damage the ballast and lamps.
13. Reinstall the UV lamps. Align the lamp connector to properly fit the 4 prong lamp. It only fits in one direction.
